Vivian S. Toy has covered residential real estate for The New York Times since July 2006. She joined the paper in 1995 and has covered City Hall, Queens and Long Island.
Before coming to The Times, she worked at The Detroit News, where she was a political reporter, and at The Milwaukee Journal, where she wrote about education and the suburbs. She is a 1985 graduate of Harvard University.
She grew up in New York’s Chinatown and she continues to marvel at how much of a small town New York City can be. She frequently runs into childhood friends on weekends when she drops her children off at the Chinese school on Mott Street where she herself learned to read and write Chinese. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, Chris, and their three children.
